What family therapy looks like-
Families come in all shapes and sizes! There are blended families, distant families, chosen families, and so many more. I meet each adult member in the family where they are in their own journey to healing. All types of families are welcome! As a therapist, I take a non-judgmental stance and help each family member explore their experience as an ever-evolving system. We do this by discovering the negative cycle that appears between family members and then use new tools and techniques to reach a deeper and stronger bond. I utilize Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT by Dr. Sue Johnson) and techniques supported by cognitive-behavioral therapies. Family sessions are conducted with adults only, you can be referred to other clinicians who specialize in working with minors.
What family therapy is NOT-
It is important to understand that therapy is not a tool to blame a family member, nor a time to decide who is right or wrong. As a therapist, I will not be taking sides but instead will give each family member a chance to be heard, even when what we have to say can be so difficult. I am also not a relationship decision maker- the choice of the future family bond lies in the hands of each adult family member.
What to expect-
There is no set amount of sessions since every family is different but it is helpful to expect an average of 10-30 sessions for families start to overcome emotional distress and disconnection so they can resolve conflict, heal wounds, and build strong bonds. I will also meet individually with each adult family member to better understand your backgrounds and attachment histories.
